Apostolos Stamatelopoulos joins Motherwell

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has landed a move to the Scottish Premiership after an undisclosed transfer fee was agreed between the Newcastle Jets and Motherwell and subject to an international clearance.

The 25-year-old, who made his Subway Socceroos debut in June, joins the Well on a three-year deal with a club option for a fourth and will hope to consolidate his spot in the national team.

The Jets allowed their star player to pursue the overseas opportunity to "further increase his chances of selection for the Socceroos".

It is the second time Stamatelopoulos has embarked on a move abroad following a two-year spell in Greece with A. E. Rodos and PAS Giannina F.C before returning to the Isuzu UTE A-League ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The striker flourished in his second stint with the Novocastrian outfit, scoring 17 goals in 25 league matches and breaking the Club’s record for most goals in a single A-League Men’s season to finish third in the Golden Boot race behind Adam Taggart (20) and Bruno Fornaroli (18).

His imperious club form culminated in a maiden call-up from Graham Arnold for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Qualifiers against Bangladesh and Palestine, appearing against the latter in Perth.

Stamatelopoulos joins the growing Aussie contingent who currently ply their trade in Scotland and will be determined to hit the ground running in the hope of adding to his solitary cap with the Green and Gold.

After putting pen-to-paper on a contract until the end of the 2026/27 season, Stamatelopoulos said via the club's website: "It’s great to finally say I’m a Motherwell player," Stamatelopoulos added.

"I was at the game on Sunday and got a real feel for the place. Seeing all the fans together and the boys playing, I just wanted to get out there.

"It’s been a long journey to get here but I can now focus on making an impact. I’m here to score goals, that’s my job. I will do my best to fulfil that.

"The boys have been brilliant and it’s been great meeting all the staff. I can’t wait to see what’s in store ahead."
