Brad Jones announces retirement from football

Perth Glory has confirmed goalkeeper Brad Jones, Subway Socceroo #502, has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 41-year-old represented Australia six times at senior level between 2007 and 2018, and was part of the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The gloveman received his first call up in February 2007, before making his debut against Uruguay four months later.

Jones enjoyed an extensive career which spanned 22 years where he mostly plied his trade in England, having made his professional debut for Middlesbrough in 2001. He also experienced stints in the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and most recently in his hometown of Perth with the Glory.

In 2010, he secured a move to English Premier League giants Liverpool and later played a pivotal role as Feyenoord won the 2016/17 Eredivisie title for the first time in 18 years.

In a statement released by Perth Glory, Jones said: “I feel proud to have achieved close to every dream I had as a young boy,” Jones said.

“From getting to play in the Premier League, to joining the team I supported as a boy in Liverpool, going to a World Cup, playing in the Champions League; it’s all been incredible.

“The path came with plenty of highs and lows but if someone told me as an eight-year-old growing up in Huntingdale that I would have the career I did, I would’ve taken that in a heartbeat.”
