With the January transfer window slamming shut here is a recap of all the Subway Socceroos who completed moves over the last month.

In total there were ten Subway Socceroos who joined new clubs this past month.

Garang Kuol: Central Coast Mariners to Newcastle United to Heart of Midlothian (on loan)

Garang Kuol officially joined Newcastle United after playing his final Central Coast Mariners match in a 2-1 New Years Eve win over Melbourne Victory after agreeing to join the Tyneside club in September.

It's been a meteoric rise for the 18-year-old who’s performances have captured the attention of football audiences around the world.

 

But as anticipated, Kuol would be sent out on loan by the Magpies to garner regular playing time to further his development.

Heart of Midlothian proved the destination with the forward completing a a move until the end of the 2022/23 season and teaming up with fellow Subway Socceroos Kye Rowles, Cammy Devlin and Nathaniel Atkinson.

Mitch Duke: Fagiano Okayama to Machida Zelvia

Mitch Duke has a new club ahead of the 2023 Japanese J2 season after signing with Machida Zelvia.

Duke agreed to the deal prior to the FIFA World Cup had spent spent the past two seasons with Fagiano Okayama for whom he scored 11 goals in 49 appearances.

Machida Zelvia are based in Tokyo and finished the 2022 season in 15th position on the J2 table.


Awer Mabil: Cádiz to Sparta Prague (on loan)

Awer Mabil secured a loan move to Czech Republic’s most successful club Sparta Prague with an option to buy from La Liga side Cadiz for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Mabil struggled for game time with the Spanish outfit, featuring just five times in the Primera Division.

Mabil links up with a familiar face at Sparta in Head Coach Brian Prisk, who coached Mabil at FC Midtjylland in Denmark.


Maty Ryan: FC Copenhagen to AZ Alkmaar

Subway Socceroos captain Mathew Ryan joined Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The 30-year-old ended a six-month spell with Danish Superliga champions FC Copenhagen, in search of consistent playing time and will compete for the number one spot alongside incumbent gloveman Hobie Verhulst.

Ryan played all four matches at the recent FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, becoming the first Australian goalkeeper to record two clean sheets at the major tournament against Tunisia and Denmark.


Nick D'Agostino: Melbourne Victory to Viking

Nick D'Agostino sealed a transfer to Norwegian outfit Viking FK after 18 months with Melbourne Victory for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old scored 15 goals in 42 appearances for Victory and now embarks on his maiden stint abroad.


James Jeggo: KAS Eupen to Hibernian FC

James Jeggo became the latest Australian to ply his trade in Scotland after completing a move to Hibernian FC until June 2024.

Jeggo, who has 15 appearances for the Subway Socceroos, arrives at Easter Road from Belgian side K.A.S Eupen where he had spent the previous year.

An experienced holding midfielder, the 30-year-old has enjoyed a successful career in Europe since departing Adelaide United in 2016.

He joins fellow Green and Gold forward Martin Boyle and Aussie Lewis Miller at Hibs.

 

Alex Gersbach: Grenoble to Colorado Rapids

Alex Gersbach has joined MLS outfit Colorado Rapids on a three-year deal with a club option for an additional year for a reported transfer fee worth €300k (A$462k).

The defender arrives from Ligue 2 side Grenoble Foot 38, where he spent the previous 18 months there amassing 45 appearances.

The 25-year-old is the third Australian currently plying his trade in the United States with Socceroo defender Milos Degenek at Columbus Crew and Brad Smith on the books of Houston Dynamo.

 


Bailey Wright: Sunderland to Rotherham United (on loan)

 Defender Bailey Wright secured a deadline day switch to Championship side Rotherham United on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Wright had accumulated just over 100 appearances in three years for the Black Cats and brings considerable experience to the Millers, with almost 400 games in English football, having previously represented Preston North End and Bristol City.

The 30-year-old has 28 caps for the Subway Socceroos and made his FIFA World Cup debut against Denmark in Qatar.


Harry Souttar: Stoke City to Leicester City

 Harry Souttar completed a deadline day move, signing with Premier League outfit Leicester City from Stoke City and realising a dream of playing in England’s top-flight.

The 24-year-old agreed to a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Foxes subject to Premier League approval, joining for an undisclosed fee reportedly in the region of £15m, approximately A$26.3m.


If the suggested figure is accurate, it is the most expensive transfer fee ever paid for an Australian footballer.

The towering centre-back was extremely impressive at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, playing every minute of all four of Australia's matches.

Joel King: Odense BK to Sydney FC (on loan)

Subway Socceroos defender Joel King returned to A-League Men's outfit Sydney FC for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.

The 22-year-old was a member of Australia's squad at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and re-joins his former club on a temporary basis from Odense BK in the Danish Superliga. 

His return comes almost a year to the day since King secured his first European move, linking up with the Danish club days after making his international debut against Vietnam on January 27, 2022.
