Current FIFA Ranking: 22

FIFA World Cup Finals

FIFA World Cup Appearances: 3 (1954, 2002, 2026)

Best Finish: 2002 - Third Place

2002 remains the country's best finish at a FIFA World Cup Finals and surprisingly their last appearance. Türkiye finished second in Group C behind eventual champions Brazil, before beating co-hosts Japan 1-0 in the last 16. They secured a 1-0 golden goal win over Senegal and came unstuck against Brazil again in the semi-final thanks to Ronaldo's expert toe-poke finish in the second half. A thrilling 3-2 win followed in the third-place playoff against fellow co-hosts Korea Republic.

Most Games: Fatih Akyel, Hakan Şükür, İlhan Mansız, Rüştü Reçber, Tugay Kerimoğlu, Ümit Davala, Yıldıray Baştürk – 7

Seven players featured in all seven matches at the 2002 edition of the tournament in Korea and Japan as Türkiye made it all the way to the third-place playoff, defeating co-hosts Korea Republic 3-2.

Most Goals: Burhan Sargun, Suat Mamat, İlhan Mansız – 3

There are three joint top-scorers at FIFA World Cup Finals, with Burhan Sargun and Suat Mamat each scoring three goals in the 1954 iteration, while İlhan Mansız netted three times for Şenol Güneş' side in that historic 2002 run.

Türkiye was impressive during qualifying, advancing to the playoffs after finishing second behind reigning European champions Spain in UEFA Group E which also contained Bulgaria and Georgia. The only blemish, a 6-1 home defeat at the hands of La Roja.

Juventus star Kenan Yildiz ended as the top scorer during the qualification phase with three goals.

During the high-stakes UEFA Path C playoffs, Türkiye secured successive 1-0 wins over Romania and Kosovo courtesy of goals from Ferdi Kadıoğlu and Kerem Aktürkoğlu to clinch a spot in the showpiece event for the first time in 24 years.

Key players

Türkiye is in the midst of a bit of a golden generation, indicative of the plethora of talent that has emerged in recent years and reflective of the clubs they represent, their current FIFA ranking of 22, and quarter-final performance at the 2024 UEFA European Championship in Germany.

Real Madrid's Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz of Juventus are indisputably the young stars of the team and are the creative lynchpins of the team. Their prodigious abilities have established a real sense of excitement amongst Turkish fans and are also considered some of football's brightest talents not only in their country but world wide.

Güler's tactical flexibility means he can operate expertly in several different positions, able to pick up space between the lines as an attacking midfielder or equally dictate the tempo of matches from a deeper position. He can also feature as a winger and possesses a wand of a left foot. Yildiz, meanwhile, is adept with both feet and functions at his best primarily off the left wing, but can also effectively play as a second striker with his pace, creativity and dribbling prowess his key traits.

Thirty-two-year-old Hakan Çalhanoğlu is the team's captain and integral to the midfield. The Inter Milan man is responsible for linking the defence with the attack and maintaining possession for his side with his impressive distribution, while being a threat from set-pieces and long distance.

Head Coach

While Italy won't be participating at the FIFA World Cup, there will be three Italian managers at the Finals. One of them is Vincenzo Montella, who helped break that 24-year drought. The former Fiorentina and AC Milan head coach has been at the helm since September 2023 and been entrusted with bringing through this exciting crop of players and meshing them with the existing senior squad members.

He guided Türkiye to the quarter finals at UEFA Euro 2024, falling 2-1 to the Netherlands in what was the country’s best finish at a major tournament since UEFA Euro 2008 when they reached the semi-finals. Montella's style of play is fairly adaptable and built on intensity and a solid structure, usually deploying a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Previous meeting

The last time Australia and Türkiye faced off was in 2004 in a two-match friendly series in Sydney and Melbourne with the Aussies suffering defeats in both games, a 3-1 loss and 1-0 setback.
