Rising CommBank Socceroos midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler is heading to the Bundesliga, completing a transfer to 1. FC Köln from Sydney FC.
Okon-Engstler has put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with the North Rhine-Westphalia club until 2030, for a fee reportedly worth €1 million ($1.64 million AUD) plus potential add-ons.
The 21-year-old is the third Aussie to make a move following his exploits at the FIFA World Cup™ 2026.
Cameron Devlin recently joined Rangers from Hearts, while Patrick Beach signed with Troyes in Ligue 1 from Melbourne City, and it is expected more will follow suit with speculation rife linking several Australian internationals with transfers.
Okon-Engstler, who has 10 Socceroos caps, featured in all four of the Socceroos matches at the major tournament – including starts against Türkiye and the United States.
The midfielder grabbed the team’s only assist at the FIFA World Cup™ when his precise long ball picked out Nestory Irankunda to open the scoring against Türkiye.
He has also played in every available match for his country since his senior debut against Venezuela in November 2025.
After signing his contract, Okon-Engstler told the club's official website: “FC is a club with a huge history, with incredible fans and stadium. I can’t wait to play there and finally get on the pitch with the team. For me, it’s exactly the right step in my career.”
Okon-Engstler enjoyed a strong 2025/26 season with the Sky Blues after three years plying his trade in Portugal with Benfica’s reserve sides.
At Sydney he accumulated 30 appearances in all competitions and won the club’s player of the season award for his consistent performances.
Okon-Engstler is the second Socceroo to represent Die Geißböcke, (The Billy Goats), after Josh Kennedy in 2003/04.
However, he follows in the footsteps of several Aussies who have signed with Bundesliga clubs including the likes of: Jackson Irvine, Connor Metcalfe, Mathew Leckie, Robbie Kruse, Nikita Rukavytsya, Dario Vidosic, Paul Agostino, Mark Schwarzer, Ned Zelic and Dave Mitchell.
Köln finished 14th in the German top-flight last season and begin the new campaign at home to Hoffenheim in late August.
