Socceroos Abroad: Duke vs Deng, Holland fires Austria Wien to Conference League qualifying

With the Socceroos squad announced for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™ Qualifiers against Bangladesh and Palestine, more of the action in Europe wrapped up while two Aussies face off in Japan.

Starting in the Austrian Bundesliga, where James Holland (cap #508) played a full game and scored the winner for Austria Wien in a 1-0 (3-1 aggregate) victory over Hartberg on Wednesday in the second leg of the UEFA Conference League play-off to clinch a qualifying spot. 

Holland also proved the difference in the first leg, scoring the opening goal in their 2-1 on Saturday morning.


Holland's tenure at the club ends in fairytale fashion. The 35-year-old made 58 appearances and scored three goals during his most recent two-year stint with the team.

Before this, he played for Austria Wien from 2012 to 2015, making 126 appearances. He then had spells at MSV Duisburg, Adelaide United, Liaoning Whowin, and LASK before returning to Austria Wien.

In Germany, John Iredale (cap #640) did not feature for Wehen Wiesbaden as they suffered relegation to the third division with a 2-1 (4-3 aggregate) loss to Jahn Regensburg on Wednesday in the 2. Bundesliga relegation play-off second leg.

Iredale came off the bench in the first leg to score in Wehen Wiesbaden’s 2-2 draw with Jahn Regensburg.

 

Elsewhere in Germany's second tier, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) was named in the team of the season for his outstanding performances with St Pauli which resulted in promotion and the title. 

 


Over to Major League Soccer, where Brad Smith (cap #575) was an unused substitute for Houston Dynamo on Thursday in a 3-1 win over Colorado.

They face Portland again on Sunday at 12:30pm (AEST).

Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) came off the bench in the 85th minute for Incheon United in the K League 1 on Wednesday as they drew 1-1 with Ulsan. 

They return to action on Saturday at 8pm (AEST) when they travel to Suwon FC. 

In Japan, Mitch Duke (cap #559) is likely to feature again for Machida Zelvia when they face Thomas Deng's (cap #598) Albirex Niigata in the J1 League on Saturday at 4pm (AEST).

Duke's Machida holds a three-point lead at the top of the table while Niigata are winless in their last two matches in 16th position.

 


Elsewhere in Japan, Mitch Langerak (cap #566) is likely to be in goal when Nagoya Grampus face Kawasaki on Sunday at 6pm (AEST). 

Back to Europe, where Awer Mabil (cap #597) could feature again for Grasshopper in their Swiss Super League Qualification second-leg against Thun on Saturday at 4:30am (AEST). 

Mabil’s Grasshopper drew 1-1 in the first leg and will need to prevail this weekend to keep their place in the Swiss top flight.

In Norway, Gianni Stesness (cap #617) could feature alongside Nick D’Agostino (cap #621) and Patrick Yazbek (cap #641) for Viking FK on Sunday at 10:30pm (AEST).

In Sweden, Alex Gersbach (cap #587) is likely to feature for Kalmar FF when they face Västerås SK Fotboll on Sunday at 10pm (AEST). 

Subway Olyroos

In the MLS, Giuseppe Bovalina came off the bench in the 90th minute for Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Thursday as they beat Sporting Kansas City. 

They face Colorado on Sunday at 12:30pm (AEST). 

In the K-League 1 League, Alexandar Popovic started and played 39 minutes for Gwangju FC on Tuesday in a 1-0 loss to Pohang Steelers.

They face FC Seoul on Sunday at 8pm (AEST).
