Socceroos Abroad: Boyle and Devlin score in Scotland, Irvine, Metcalfe and Ryan in crucial clashes elsewhere in Europe

The season is starting to wind down for Commbank Socceroos abroad in Europe, with some vital clashes to be played out over the weekend.

In addition to Martin Boyle and Cameron Devlin scoring during the week in Scotland, the pair have crucial games this weekend. Elsewhere in Europe, Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe face a must-win task to avoid relegation in Germany, while Maty Ryan is also involved in a similar test over in Spain.

Here is the latest ahead of another thrilling weekend of Socceroos abroad action. 

CommBank Socceroos

Starting in Scotland, Martin Boyle (cap #599) scored the opening goal for Hibernian in a 2-1 win against Rangers on Thursday morning. Jack Iredale played a full game for Hibs, while Ante Suto came on in the 69th minute for the side. Hibernian conclude their season at home to Motherwell on Saturday at 9:30 pm (AEST), where a victory would send them into a UEFA Conference League qualification place. 

Continuing in Scotland on Thursday, Cameron Devlin (cap #625) scored for Hearts in their 3-0 win over Falkirk. The midfielder played 67 minutes in what was his first start since mid-April. Hearts can wrap up the Scottish Premiership title against Celtic on Saturday at 9:30 pm (AEST) in a blockbuster clash.

In the German Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) are expected to feature in a potentially season-defining final-round clash with Wolfsburg at home on Saturday night at 11:30 pm (AEST). 

The bottom three teams in the Bundesliga are all tied on 26 points, with Wolfsburg currently occupying the only relegation qualification place. If St. Pauli beat their opponents on Saturday, they will leapfrog them into a clash with 2. Bundesliga champions Schalke to maintain their spot in the spot top flight.

In LaLiga, Maty Ryan (cap #555) produced a top display for Levante, making four saves in their crucial 3-2 win against Celta Vigo. The goalkeeper is expected to start again on Monday at 3:00 am (AEST) against Mallorca in another must-win game, which could have huge implications for the relegation battle, heading into the final game of the season.

Looking to Austria, Jacob Italiano (cap #653) is expected to start for Grazer AK away to BW Linz on Sunday at 1:00 am (AEST) in the final game of the season. Grazer are currently three points ahead of Linz with a superior goal difference, but the side will need to avoid a heavy defeat to stay clear of relegation. 

Riley McGree (cap #609) scored for Middlesbrough in their 2-1 loss to Southampton after extra time in the EFL Championship Semi-Final play-off second leg. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, this second leg defeat rules Middlesbrough out of the race for a spot in the Premier League. McGree finishes the season with six goals and three assists.

Sam Silvera (cap #634) was on the Middlesbrough bench for the defeat.

Moving to the MLS, Lucas Herrington (cap #658) played a full game for Colorado in a 1-0 win against Minnesota on Thursday. Colorado take on Real Salt Lake on Sunday at 11:30 am (AEST).

Kai Trewin (cap #656) played a full game for New York City as they beat Charlotte FC 1-0 on Thursday morning. New York City travel to New York Red Bulls on Sunday at 9:30 am (AEST).

Elsewhere on Thursday, Kye Rowles (cap #622) played all of DC United’s 3-1 loss to Chicago. United host St. Louis City on Sunday at 9:30 am (AEST).

Over in Serie A, Alessandro Circati (cap #637) is likely to start for Parma away to Como on Sunday at 8:00 pm (AEST).

In Eredivisie, three Socceroos will play their final games of the season concurrently at 10:30 pm (AEST).

Jordan Bos (cap #632) is expected to start on the final day of the league season for Feyenoord away to PEC Zwolle, while Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) should start for Heracles at home against Groningen.

Finally, Max Balard (cap #652) played a full game for NAC Breda in their 2-0 win against Heerenveen on Monday night. The side concludes their season against AZ Alkmaar.

In Denmark, Paul Izzo (cap #650) was the goalkeeper for Randers in their 2-2 draw with OB on Tuesday morning.  The side takes on København on Sunday at 10:00 pm (AEST).

Deni Juric (cap #659) could start for Wisla Plock on Sunday at 1:30 am (AEST) against Gornik Zabrze in Poland.

Over in Cyprus, Milos Degenek (cap #585) could feature for APOEL against Omonia on Sunday at 1:00 am (AEST).

Fran Karacic (cap #607) could get minutes for Osijek in their away clash with HNK Gorica on Sunday at 12:00 am (AEST) in Croatia’s HNL.

Awer Mabil (cap #597) might start for Castellon when they host Cadiz on Saturday at 4:30 am (AEST) in Spain’s La Liga 2. The side continues to cling to a play-off spot for La Liga promotion with three matches remaining.

Back in Scotland, Ryan Strain (cap #624) played until the 83rd minute as Dundee United drew 0-0 with Livingston on Wednesday morning. Strain’s Dundee United face St. Mirren on Sunday at 11:00 pm (AEST).

Elsewhere on the final day, Livingston hosts Kilmarnock at 11:00 pm (AEST), where Ryan McGowan (cap #546) could feature, and Nicolas Milanovic (cap #651) could play for Aberdeen against Dundee FC.

In J-League 2, Jason Geria (cap #586) is expected to start for Albirex Niigata on Saturday at 3:00 pm (AEST).

Kenny Dougall (cap #608) and Curtis Good (cap #569) played full games for Buriram United as the side went through to the ASEAN Club Championship Final with a 4-3 aggregate win against Johor Darul Ta’zim. United lost the second leg 2-1, but a 3-1 win in the first leg was enough to see them through.

Buriram United will have another chance to add to their silverware when they face Ayutthaya United in the Thai FA Cup Final on Sunday at 10:00 pm (AEST).

In India, Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) played 86 minutes for Mohun Bagan SG in a 0-0 draw with Inter Kashi on Wednesday morning, while Jason Cummings (cap #626) played the first half.
