Socceroos Abroad: Boyle and Irvine shine in key performances

There were several standout performances from our Socceroos abroad over the weekend, with Martin Boyle playing a pivotal role in Hibernian’s 3-1 win over Aberdeen, while Jackson Irvine helped St. Pauli secure a vital 1-0 victory.

Starting in Scotland, where Martin Boyle (cap #599) was the standout performer this weekend, leading Hibernian to a 3-1 win over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday. Boyle scored his first league goal since September and provided two assists, helping his side secure just their fourth league win of the season.

 

Lewis Miller (cap #635) also came off the bench in the 51st minute, while Olyroo Nectarios Triantis played a full game and added to the Aussie impact with an assist.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Kye Rowles (cap #622) and Cameron Devlin (cap #625) both completed full matches as Heart of Midlothian secured a 2-1 win over Livingston on Monday to climb to 10th place.

Ryan Strain (cap #624) played the full match for Dundee United as they held league leaders Celtic to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, despite having only 22% possession.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) played 85 minutes for Motherwell in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock on Saturday. The result keeps Motherwell in fourth place in the Scottish Premiership while Josh Nisbet (cap #642) played 69 minutes for Ross County in a 2-1 loss to St Mirren on Sunday.

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) also completed a full match for Livingstone a narrow 1-0 loss. Livingstone remains second in the Scottish Championship on Sunday, but Ayr in third have closed the gap to two points.

Jackson Irvine (cap #568) also put in a dominant performance, playing a full match and credited with an assist as St. Pauli recorded a crucial 1-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the German Bundesliga on Sunday. The result moves them four points clear of the relegation zone in 14th place.


In England, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) played the full match for Ipswich Town in a 4-0 loss to a red-hot Newcastle United on Sunday. Ipswich remains in the Premier League relegation zone, three points from safety.

Harry Souttar (cap #606) played a full game in Sheffield United's 2-0 win, helping them keep a clean sheet and stay three points clear at the top of the EFL Championship on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Riley McGree (cap #509) started and played 75 minutes for Middlesbrough in a thrilling 3-3 draw on Sunday. Boro is now sixth in the Championship and firmly in the playoff hunt.

Samuel Silvera (cap #634) was an unused substitute for Portsmouth in a 4-1 win over Frank Lampard's Coventry City on Saturday.

Callum Elder (cap #614) also completed 90 minutes in Derby County’s 2-1 loss to Luton on Saturday, leaving them in 16th place.

Jordan Bos (cap #632) played a full game for KVC Westerlo in a 1-1 draw to K.V. Mechelen on Saturday in the Belgian Pro League, keeping them 11th and five points clear of the relegation zone.

Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) featured for 83 minutes in a back-three role as Standard de Liège fell 1-0 to Genk in the Belgian Pro League on Monday.


In Italy, Maty Ryan (cap #555) was an unused substitute for Roma as they returned to Serie A action on Sunday in a 5-0 win against Parma.

Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) came on as a substitute in the 65th minute for U.S. Salernitana 1919 during a 0-0 draw to Brescia on Saturday in Serie B. Verona sits in 16th place, just two points above the relegation zone.

In the Eredivisie, recent Socceroos call-up Max Balard played a full game for NAC Breda on Sunday in a 2-1 loss to Go Ahead Eagles.

Jason Davidson (cap #545) kept a clean sheet in a full match for Panserraikos in the Greek Super League as they drew 0-0 with Panetolikos FC on Monday.

In Croatia, Fran Karacic (cap #607) played the full match and provided an assist in NK Lokomotiva’s impressive 4-1 victory on Sunday, moving them up to seventh place.

In the Indian Super League, Jamie Maclaren (cap #584) played a full match for Mohun Bagan in their 2-1 loss to FC Goa on Sunday. Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) was replaced by Jason Cummings (cap #626) in the 58th minute and he went on to score a penalty. Despite the loss, Mohun Bagan remains two points clear at the top of the table.
