Socceroos Abroad: Burgess assists, Duke's Machida Zelvia finish historic J1 League campaign

Mitch Duke’s Machida Zelvia capped off an historic debut season in Japan’s top flight with a third-place finish, Cam Burgess grabbed an assist for Ipswich Town, while Jackson Irvine delivered another strong performance in the Bundesliga for St Pauli.

Starting in the Premier League, where Cam Burgess (cap #633) played another full game and assisted in Ipswich Town's 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Monday. Despite the disappointing result, Burgess put in another solid showing and expertly set up teammate Conor Chaplin with a clever cut-back for Ipswich's goal.

In Japan, Mitch Duke (cap #599) came off the bench in the 74th minute for Machida Zelvia in a 3-1 loss to Kashima Antlers on Sunday in J.League, concluding a remarkable debut season in J1 for the club.

Machida entered the final round of the season as title contenders, needing a win and favourable results elsewhere to secure the championship. However, their loss, coupled with victories for Vissel Kobe and Gamba Osaka, saw the J1 newcomers finish third in a competitive title race.

Despite the disappointment, Machida’s campaign remains an historic achievement in their first season in Japan's top flight.

Also in Japan’s top flight, Thomas Deng (cap #598) came off the bench in the 90th minute to make his last appearance for Albirex Niigata as they drew 0-0 with Urawa Red Diamonds on Sunday to end their campaign.

In the German Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (#568) played another full game for St Pauli as they lost 2-1 to Leverkusen on Sunday.

Leverkusen now have 26 points from 13 matches and sit in third place, seven points behind leader Bayern, while St Pauli are just above the danger zone with 11 points.

To Bayern Munich, where Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) played 90 minutes for the second team in their 3-1 Regionalliga win against FC Augsburg II on Saturday.

In the English Championship, Riley McGree (cap #509) came off the bench in the 77th minute for Middlesbrough as they drew 1-1 with second-placed Burnley on Saturday.

 


Samuel Silvera (cap #634) was an unused substitute for Portsmouth in a 3-0 win over Bristol City on Sunday in the Championship.

In England's League One, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played 63 minutes for Mansfield Town in a 2-1 loss to Huddersfield on Sunday.

In Scotland, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) played 77 minutes for Motherwell in a 1-0 win over St Mirren on Sunday.

Kye Rowles (cap #622) and Cameron Devlin (cap #625) both played full games for Heart of Midlothian as they beat Dundee 2-0 on Sunday.

 


Lewis Miller (cap #635) played 83 minutes while Martin Boyle (cap #599) came off the bench in the 73rd minute for Hibernian in a 3-0 loss to Celtic on Sunday.

Josh Nisbet (cap #642) played another full game for Ross County in a 3-0 loss to Rangers on Sunday, while Ryan Strain (cap #624) also played a full game for Dundee United in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.

In the Scottish Championship, Ryan McGowan (cap #546) also played a full game for Livingston in a 0-0 draw with Greenock Morton FC on Sunday.

In Belgium, Jordan Bos (cap #632) came off the bench in the 74th minute for KVC Westerlo on Monday in a 1-0 loss to FCV Dender E.H.

Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) played a full game for Standard Liège in a 1-1 draw with Oud-Heverlee Leuven on Sunday to record back-to-back draws in the Belgian Pro League. 

In Italy's Serie A, Maty Ryan (cap #555) was on the bench for Roma in a 4-1 win over U.S. Lecce on Sunday.

Elsewhere in Italy, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) played 68 minutes for Salernitana in Serie B as they drew 1-1 with Modena FC 2018 on Sunday. Modena sit 15th in the league. 

In the Danish Cup quarter-finals first leg, John Iredale (cap #640) came off the bench in the 85th minute for AaB Fodbold in a 2-2 draw with Silkeborg IF on Monday.

In the Eredivisie, recent Socceroos call-up Max Balard also played a game for NAC Breda on Monday in a 2-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam.

In France, Denis Genreau (cap #610) was an unused substitute for Toulouse in a 2-0 loss to AS Monaco on Sunday.

In Croatia’s HNL, Fran Karacic (cap #607) played another full game for NK Lokomotiva in a 3-0 loss to NK Osijek on Monday.

In Greece, Jason Davidson (cap #545) played a full game for Panserraikos on Monday and scored an own goal in a 4-1 loss to PAOK. 

Jamie Maclaren (cap #584) played 88 minutes while Jason Cummings (cap #626) replaced Dimitri Petratos (cap # 593) in the 76th minute for Mohun Bagan SG in a 2-0 win over NorthEast United FC on Monday in the Indian Super League.

Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played a full game for Buriram United and kept a clean sheet at centre-back in a 6-0 win over Ratchaburi FC on Sunday in the Thai League.

Starting in the Austrian Bundesliga, where Jacob Italiano came off the bench in the 61st minute for Grazer AK in a 3-0 loss to TSV Hartbergon on Monday.

Louis D'Arrigo came off the bench in the 96th minute for Lechia Gdansk as they beat Śląsk Wrocław 1-0 on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Nectarios Triantis played another full game for Hibernian as they lost 3-0 to Celtic on Sunday.
