Socceroos Abroad: Burgess debuts in Premier League as Aussies shine worldwide

It was an exciting weekend as our Socceroos Abroad returned to action in style, highlighted by Cam Burgess’ Premier League debut.

Lewis Miller and Nestory Irankunda both made significant contributions, with Miller providing an assist for Hibernian, and Irankunda assisting in Bayern Munich II's victory. Alexander Robertson scored a cracker for Cardiff, while Awer Mabil found the back of the net for Grasshopper.

Mitch Langerak made an emotional farewell as he prepares to return to Melbourne Victory after 14 years abroad, while Jamie Maclaren and Dimitri Petratos also scored for Mohun Bagan, and Fran Karacic netted for NK Lokomotiva.

Nick D'Agostino and Mohamed Toure also found the back of the nets for their respective clubs.

Subway Socceroos

Starting in the English Premier League, where Cam Burgess (cap #633) played the full game for Ipswich Town as they lost 2-0 to Everton on Sunday.

After three seasons of consistent playing time, Burgess has had to wait for his opportunities in England's top flight this season. Burgess won eight of his ten duels in a solid debut performance, with Ipswich now sitting in 17th position in the table.
 


Elsewhere in the Premier League, Joe Gauci (cap #631) returned to the bench for Aston Villa as they beat Fulham 3-1 on Sunday.

In the English Championship, Alexander Robertson (cap #630) opened the scoring in some style for Cardiff City in a big 5-0 win over Wayne Rooney's Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The Welsh side had only enjoyed one win so far this season in the Championship heading into the game but took home all three points with an impressive victory at the Cardiff City Stadium.
 

 


Elsewhere, Riley McGree (cap #509) came off the bench in the 74th minute for Middlesbrough as they lost 2-0 to Bristol City on Sunday.

Michael Carrick's Boro side started the brighter of the two, but the Robins took the lead against the run of play as the win sent Bristol City up to tenth in the table, and level on points with Middlesbrough.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Harry Souttar (cap #606) played a full game for Sheffield United as they suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Leeds United on Saturday.

The defeat brings an end to 540 minutes of football without conceding for the Blades.

Kusini Yengi (cap #638) returned from injury to come off the bench in the 71st minute for Portsmouth as they beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 on Sunday to seal Pompey's maiden three points following their 12-year return to the Championship.

Meanwhile, Callum Elder (cap #614) was an unused substitute for Derby County in a 1-1 draw with Millwall on Sunday. 

In League One, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) came off the bench in the 67th minute for Mansfield Town as they lost 1-0 to Stevenage FC on Sunday.

To Bayern Munich, where Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) played 93 minutes and registered an assist as the second team secured a 3-2 win in their Regionalliga match against FV Illertissen on Saturday.
 

 


In the Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (#568) played another full game for St Pauli on Saturday as they lost 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund.

It was St Pauli's fifth loss in seven games since returning to the top flight while Dortmund (13 points) rose to fourth in the standings, one point behind leaders Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Promoted St. Pauli remain third bottom on four points.

Over to Scotland, where Lewis Miller (cap #635) played the first half and also assisted as Hibernian lost 3-2 to Dundee United on Sunday. Martin Boyle (cap #599) also returned from injury, replacing Miller at the break. 

Kye Rowles (cap #622) also played a full game while Cameron Devlin (cap #625) came off the bench in the 71st minute and assisted the final goal in a 4-0 win over St Mirren on Sunday.

Neil Critchley enjoyed a dream debut as Hearts manager as they recorded their first victory of the Scottish Premiership season.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) also played the first half for Motherwell in a 1-0 loss against Dundee on Sunday.

Josh Nisbet (cap #642) was another who played the first 45 minutes as Ross County lost 3-0 to St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

In the Scottish Championship, Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played the full game for Livingston in a 2-1 win over Ayr FC on Sunday, while his brother Dylan McGowan (cap #590) was an unused substitute for Hamilton Academical in a 3-1 loss to Falkirk on Saturday.

In the Swiss Super League, Awer Mabil (cap #597) came off the bench in the 60th minute and made an immediate impact, scoring within three minutes for Grasshopper as they lost 2-1 to second-placed FC Zürich in the derby on Sunday.
 

 


In Italy's Serie A, Maty Ryan (cap #555) was an unused substitute for Roma as they lost 1-0 to Inter Milan on Monday.

In J.League, Mitch Duke (cap #559) came off the bench in the 72nd minute for Machida Zelvia as they secured a last-minute point against Kashiwa Reysol on Saturday with a 1-1 draw. Machida sit in third position, five points off the top of the league.

Elsewhere in Japan, Thomas Deng (cap #598) played another full game and kept a clean sheet for Albirex Niigata in a 0-0 draw with John Hutchinson's Yokohama FM on Friday. 

Mitch Langerak (cap #566) was in goal for Nagoya Grampus again as they lost 2-0 to Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo on Saturday.

Langerak received a fantastic farewell ceremony following the match. After breaking multiple goalkeeping records since joining Nagoya in 2018, the 37-year-old is coming home to join the Melbourne Victory after 14 years overseas at the end of the J.League season.
 

 


In the Belgian First Division A, Jordan Bos (cap #632) also returned to club action with 58 minutes for K.V.C. Westerlo as they lost 2-1 to Club Brugge on Sunday.

Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) also played a full game for Standard de Liège as they beat Royal Charleroi SC 2-1 on Monday.

Over to Denmark, where Mohamed Toure (cap #636) came off the bench at half-time and scored a last minute penalty while Paul Izzo was in goal again for Randers as they returned to Danish Superliga action with a 2-0 win over John Iredale's (cap #640) AaB Fodbold on Sunday. Iredale came off the bench in the 69th minute for Aab.
 


In France, Denis Genreau (cap #610) came off the bench in the 73rd minute for Toulouse as they continued their Ligue 1 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Angers on Monday.

In Sweden, Alex Gersbach (cap #587) played 59 minutes for Kalmar FF as they lost 3-0 to Mjällby AIF on Sunday.

In Norway’s Eliteserien, Gianni Stensness (cap #671) played a full game for Viking FK in a 3-3 draw with Odds BK on Monday. Nick D'Agostino (cap #621) also came off the bench in the 72nd minute and scored a last-minute equaliser.

In Croatia’s HNL, Fran Karacic (cap #607) played the full game and scored a goal for NK Lokomotiva at centre-back as they drew 2-2 with HNK Rijeka on Saturday.
 


In the Greek Super League, Jason Davidson (cap #545) also played a full game for Panserraikos in a 1-0 win over Volos on Sunday.

In Major League Soccer, Patrick Yazbek (cap #641) came off the bench at half-time for Nashville in a 3-0 win over Chicago Fire FC on Sunday.

Jamie Maclaren (cap #584) played 72 minutes and scored a goal before being replaced by Dimitri Petratos (cap # 593), who scored a penalty to cap off Mohun Bagan SG's 2-0 win over bottom-placed East Bengal on Sunday. Jason Cummings (cap #626) also came off the bench in the 92nd minute.

Starting in the Austrian Bundesliga, where Jacob Italiano came off the bench in the 75th minute for Grazer AK in a 5-2 win over SK Sturm Graz on Sunday.

Over to the USA, Lachlan Brook was an unused substitute for Real Salt Lake City in the MLS on Sunday in a 2-1 win against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
