Socceroos Abroad: Circati captains Parma to victory, Devlin scores in loss to Boyle’s Hibs

There were several highlights in the past week of Socceroos abroad action, with Alessandro Circati captaining Parma for the first time in his return from injury and Cameron Devlin scoring his first goal of the season in Scotland.

There are another jam-packed set of fixtures coming this week, so here is the latest overseas Socceroos news.

Starting in Italy’s Serie A, Alessandro Circati (cap #637) made his return from injury in spectacular fashion, contributing to a clean sheet in a full game for Parma in their 1-0 win over Fiorentina on Saturday night. After not playing since early November, the 22-year-old defender also wore the captain’s armband for the first time in his Parma career. In September, he became the youngest player in 44 years to captain the Socceroos.

Parma travel to Sassuolo on Sunday at 1:00 am (AEST).

Looking to Scotland’s Premiership, Cameron Devlin (cap #625) scored in Hearts’ 3-2 loss to Hibernian on Saturday night. It was the midfielder’s first goal of the campaign in what has been a strong season, seeing his team battling for the Scottish league title.

For Hibernian, Martin Boyle (cap #599) played until the 84th minute and November window call-up Jack Iredale played the full match. 

Hearts host Livingston on Sunday at 2:00am (AEST).

Hibs will be in action against on Wednesday against Aberdeen at 6:45am (AEST), before travelling to Kilmarnock on Sunday at 2:00am (AEST).

 

Nicholas Milanovic (cap #651) came on in the 82nd minute for Aberdeen as they drew 1-1 with Dundee United on Sunday.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) came on in the 69th minute for Motherwell in a 1-0 loss to Rangers on Sunday. The striker should get more minutes on Wednesday at 7:00 am (AEDT) against Celtic, before taking on St. Mirren on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT).

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played all of Livingston’s 4-2 loss to Celtic on Sunday.

In the EFL Championship, plenty of Socceroos received minutes in the weekend action, with plenty more to come during the week. 

Hayden Matthews (cap #648) played a full game for Portsmouth as the side drew 1-1 with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday morning. Portsmouth take on Charlton Athletic on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT). 

Also, Lewis Miller (cap #635) contributed to a clean sheet for Blackburn Rovers as they drew 0-0. Rovers travel to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT). 

Callum Elder (cap #614) played a full match for Derby County in their 1-1 draw with Birmingham City. Derby are away to Leicester City on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT). 

Cameron Burgess (cap #633) put in a strong performance in defence despite Swansea City’s 1-0 loss to Coventry City on Saturday. The defender made three interceptions and 15 clearances in the match. Swansea take on Oxford United on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT). 

Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) came on after 66 minutes of Watford’s 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday morning. Watford travel to Norwich City on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT).

In EFL League One, Alex Robertson (cap #630) scored his first goal of the season for Cardiff City, playing 79 minutes as they beat Exeter City 1-0 on Saturday morning. The midfielder is likely to feature again when Cardiff host Stevenage on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT). 

Elsewhere in the competition, Joe Gauci (cap #631) was on Port Vale’s bench for their 5-0 loss to Huddersfield. Port Vale travel to Bradford City at the same time on Tuesday morning. 

In Spain, Maty Ryan (cap #555) should be in goal when Levante travel to Sevilla in La Liga on Monday at 12:00am (AEDT).

In EFL League Two, Gethin Jones (cap #639) played until the 89th minute for MK Dons in a 1-0 win against Swindon Town on Saturday morning. The defender is likely to start again on Tuesday at 6:45am (AEDT) against Notts County.

In Spain's La Liga 2, Awer Mabil (cap #597) is likely to feature for Castellon when they travel to SD Huesca on Sunday at 2:15am (AEDT).

Finishing off the European action in Belgium, Ryan Teague (cap #649) came on in the 89th minute for KV Mechelen as they drew 1-1 with FCV Dender EH on Monday morning. It was Teague’s first minutes in the Belgian Pro League since September. 

The Belgian top flight will resume in mid-January.

In Thailand, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played all of Buriram United’s 1-0 win against Sukhothai on Wednesday night.

In EFL League One, Raphael Borges Rodrigues played a full game for Wigan Athletic as they lost 2-1 to Bradford City on Saturday. Wigan are away to Burton Albion on Tuesday at 6:45 am (AEDT).
