Socceroos Abroad: D'Agostino and Stensness win title in Norway

CommBank Socceroos across the globe were in the thick of the action this week, headlined by Nicholas D'Agostino and Gianni Stensness' historic title win in Norway and goals from Martin Boyle and Mitch Duke.

Starting in Norway, Nick D'Agostino (cap #621) and Gianni Stensness (cap #617) made history as Viking FK secured their first Norwegian top-flight title in 34 years, edging out Bodø/Glimt by a point, with a 5-1 win over Vålerenga Fotball on Monday.

Stensness played the full game and assisted the opening goal. D'Agostino was not in the squad but was present in the iconic celebrations after impressing with four goal contributions across 10 matches this season.

The title means Viking FK will enter next season’s UEFA Champions League in the playoff stage, one step before the group phase.
 


In Japan, Mitch Duke (cap #559) played 62 minutes and scored a goal for Machida Zelvia on Sunday in the J. League in a 3-1 win over Nagoya. The three points leave them in sixth position with one J. League match remaining. 
 


In Scotland, Martin Boyle (cap #599) played 79 minutes and scored a penalty as Hibernian lost 2-1 to Celtic on Monday. November window call-up Jack Iredale also came off the bench in the 38th minute.
 


Elsewhere in Scotland, Nicolas Milanovic (cap #651) came off the bench in the 78th minute for Aberdeen on Monday in a 1-0 win over Livingston FC.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) came off the bench in the 84th minute for Motherwell as they drew 0-0 with Cameron Devlin's (cap #625) Heart of Midlothian FC on Sunday. Devlin played the full 90 minutes.

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Ryan Strain (cap #624) played 76 minutes for Dundee United in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock FC on Sunday.

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played a full game for St Mirren FC in a 3-1 loss to Dundee on Sunday.

In the EFL Championship action, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) played a full game for Swansea City in a 4-2 loss to West Brom on Sunday. 

Meanwhile, Callum Elder (cap #614) also played another full game for Derby County as they lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough on Sunday. Riley McGree (cap #509) came off the bench in the 54th minute, while Sam Silvera (cap #634) was an unused substitute.

In the MLS Cup playoffs, Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) played the full match as New York City FC were knocked out in a 5–1 loss to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami on Sunday.

NYCFC briefly rallied through a Justin Haak header after falling 2–0 behind, but Miami pulled away in the second half to end Pascal Jansen’s side’s postseason run. O’Neill returned to the starting XI for the Eastern Conference Final, but New York City couldn’t repeat their earlier playoff heroics against Charlotte and Philadelphia.
