Socceroos Abroad: Geria and Rowles debuts, Boyle and Miller stun Celtic, Irankunda assists

There were plenty of headlines for Subway Socceroos abroad this weekend as three made debuts for their new clubs while others contributed to some big results for their teams.

Here is a look at how the weekend’s action played out.

Jason Geria (cap #586) made his debut for Albirex Niigata, coming off the bench in the 77th minute in the team’s 2-0 loss to Shimizu S-Pulse on Saturday afternoon in J. League.

Kye Rowles (cap #622) also made his debut, playing all of DC United’s 2-2 draw with Toronto on Sunday in Major League Soccer. Rowles has been handed the vice-captaincy for DC.

Finally, Awer Mabil (cap #597) received his first minutes for his new side Castellon, being subbed on in the 58th minute of their 0-0 draw with Cadiz on Monday in the Segunda Division.

There were some standout performances on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership.

Martin Boyle (cap #599) played 78 minutes for Hibernian, picking up an assist in their stunning 2-1 victory over title-chasing Celtic. It was only Celtic’s second defeat in the competition this season.

 

Lewis Miller (cap #635) played a full game for Hibs as well.

Ryan Strain (cap #624) provided an assist for Dundee United as they edged past Motherwell 1-0, while Josh Nisbet (cap #642) was subbed on in the 82nd minute of Ross County’s 3-1 win over Dundee United.

In the Swiss Super League, Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) assisted Grasshopper’s first goal in their 2-2 draw with Lausanne on Sunday. The winger played 76 minutes and now has three assists since joining on loan from Bayern Munich.

Mohamed Toure (cap #636) played 70 minutes for Randers as they drew 0-0 with Lyngby on Saturday in Denmark’s Superligaen.

Paul Izzo was the starting goalkeeper for Randers and was integral in the side keeping a clean sheet, making three saves.

Hayden Matthews (cap #648) played a full game for Portsmouth in their 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday in the EFL Championship. Matthews made six clearances and won both of his tackles.


Kusini Yengi (cap #638) returned to the bench for the side following his injury layoff.

In EFL League One, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) assisted Mansfield Town’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Wrexham on Monday. Baccus played 63 minutes for Mansfield.

In Croatia’s HNL, Fran Karacic (cap #607) picked up an assist in his full game for NK Lokomotiva as the side beat NK Varazdin 1-0 on Saturday morning. The full-back now has two goals and four assists in the competition this season.

Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) played a full game for Standard Liege as they beat Club Brugge 2-1 on Monday in Belgium’s Pro League.

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game for Livingston in their 2-1 win over Ayr United on Sunday in the Scottish Championship.

In the Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played all of St. Pauli’s 2-0 loss to Mainz on Sunday. Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) made the bench for the first time since September for St. Pauli.

In France’s Ligue 1, Mathew Ryan (cap #55) was the goalkeeper for Lens as the side lost 3-1 to Nantes on Monday.

In Saudi Pro League, Craig Goodwin (cap #562) played a full game for Al-Wehda in their 1-0 loss to Al Kholood on Sunday.

Elsewhere in EFL League One, Joe Gauci (cap #631) appeared to pick up an injury and had to be replaced after 75 minutes of Barnsley’s 1-0 win over Rotherham United on Sunday.

Garang Kuol (cap #627) played all of Newcastle United Academy’s 4-1 loss to Arsenal’s academy on Saturday morning in Premier League 2.

In the Greek Super League, Jason Davidson (cap #545) played all of Panserraikos’ 1-0 defeat to Atromitos on Sunday.

In Thai League, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played a full game for Buriram United in their 3-1 win over Muang Thong United on Sunday night.

Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) scored a stoppage-time winner for Mogun Bagan SG to secure a crucial three points against Odisha FC on Monday and claim the ISL Shield to become Indian champions.

Petratos was subbed on in the 78th minute, while Jason Cummings (cap #626) came on in the 86th minute. Jamie Maclaren (cap #584) played a full game for Mohun.

Nectarios Triantis assisted Hibernian’s first goal in their 2-1 win over Celtic on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership.

Jed Drew was subbed off after 41 minutes for Hartberg as the team drew 0-0 with Altach on Monday in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Cameron Peupion was sent off in the 73rd minute of ADO Den Haag’s 4-1 victory against MVV Maastricht on Monday in Eerste Divisie.
