Socceroos Abroad: Irankunda and Stensness impress; Robertson v McGree; Volpato set to return

Nestory Irankunda continued his fine form, picking up an assist in the UEFA Champions League for Sporting midweek.

Elsewhere, Gianni Stensness was on the scoresheet for Viking FK in a thriller against Bayern Munich, while Eli Adams pulled the strings in the Asian Champions League.

This weekend, Cristian Volpato will hope to make his return to the field after a thigh injury, while fellow CommBank Socceroos will meet in the EFL Championship.

In Focus

Robertson and McGree face off

It will be a CommBank Socceroo-heavy midfield in the EFL Championship this weekend, as Alex Robertson's Cardiff City and Riley McGree's Middlesbrough meet.

Middlesbrough will be favourites heading into the fixture. They are currently second in the Championship, with six wins from their first ten games. Cardiff, meanwhile, are languishing in 19th, with only two wins to show for their efforts so far.

McGree has been consistently receiving minutes as he builds into the season while Robertson has been a standout for The Bluebirds, excelling in a slightly deeper role in the centre of the park.

Fixture: Middlesbrough v Cardiff City, Saturday 17 October, 10.30pm AEDT

Volpato looks to make return to pitch

Cristian Volpato made his return to Sassuolo's matchday squad last week and will hope that translates to the field this time out, as his side takes on Frosinone in Serie A.

Volpato was in wonderful form to start the season before being curtailed by a thigh injury against Bologna. The 22-year-old had scored two goals in all competitions in five games.

Sassuolo are currently sitting midtable, with two wins and two draws from their six Serie A fixtures so far this season.

Fixture: Frosinone v Sassuolo, Saturday 17 October, 5.45am AEDT

Midweek Headlines

Champions League assist for Nestory

Nestory Irankunda continued his remarkable form for both club and country, picking up an assist midweek against Lens in the UEFA Champions League.

The 20-year-old picked up the ball on the left-hand side and showed off the pace he is renowned for, getting around his player and putting in a low cross for Luis Suarez to open the scoring for Sporting. It was his second assist in consecutive games after the international break.

The youngster continues to impress at his new club and, with no games in Liga Portugal this weekend, will hope to continue his fine form next week.

Result: Lens 0 - 2 Sporting CP

Stensness scores as Viking stun Bayern

Gianni Stensness scored a header within two minutes of Viking FK's UEFA Champions League tie against German giants Bayern Munich, helping his side to a 3-3 draw against the odds.

It was a raucous match, with the unfavoured Viking storming to a two-goal lead early in the match. Bayern fought back to make it 3-2, before a 90th minute equaliser saw the Norwegian side leave with a well-earned point.

Result: Viking FK 3 - 3 Bayern Munich

Adams impresses against old club

Recent CommBank Socceroos call-up Eli Adams sent a reminder to Australia as to why he received his maiden selection in the previous international window, picking up two assists in Gamba Osaka's 3-1 victory over the Newcastle Jets in the AFC Asian Champions League.

Adams started and played the full game, pulling the strings from the right-hand side of midfield.

The 24-year-old continues to go from strength to strength and will hope that his form is enough to convince Head Coach Tony Popovic of another call-up in the November window.

Result: Newcastle Jets 1 - 3 Gamba Osaka
