Socceroos Abroad: Irvine and Metcalfe seal Bundesliga promotion, Ryan and Rowles clean sheets

It was a huge weekend for some Socceroos abroad as midfielders Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe helped confirm St Pauli's promotion to the Bundesliga.

There were also clean sheets for a key defensive duo as the season winds down across Europe. 

In the 2. Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) picked up another assist for St Pauli in their 3-1 win over VfL Osnarbruck on Sunday night, which saw the team earn automatic promotion to the Bundesliga. Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) also played a full game for St Pauli. With a win this weekend, the side can secure the 2. Bundesliga title or match Holstein Kiel's result. 

 


Kye Rowles (cap #622) helped keep a clean sheet in his full game for Hearts as the side beat Dundee FC 3-0 on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership championship group. Cameron Devlin (cap #625) also played 71 minutes for Hearts in his 100th appearance for the club.

 


Mathew Ryan (cap #555) played well in goal for AZ Alkmaar, keeping a clean sheet as the team downed Go Ahead Eagles 3-0 in Eredivisie on Sunday.


In Scotland’s League One, Dylan McGowan (cap #590) played all of Hamilton Academical’s 3-2 win over Alloa Athletic on Sunday. This result means the side prevailed on aggregate across the two legs 5-4 and sees them through to the play-off final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle for a shot at Scottish Championship football.

In Croatia’s HNL, Fran Karacic (cap #607) played a full game for Rudes as they lost 2-1 HNK Gorica on Saturday morning.

In the Swiss Super League’s relegation group, Awer Mabil (cap #597) played 81 minutes for Grasshopper in their 1-1 draw with Luzern on Saturday morning.

Alexander Gersbach (cap #587) returned to the Kalmar FF bench as they were beaten 3-1 by Hacken on Sunday night in Sweden’s Allsvenskan.

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) remained on the bench for Parma’s last match in Serie B as they drew 1-1 with Reggiana on Saturday morning.

In the Eredivisie, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) played 73 minutes for Heracles in their 4-0 defeat to Excelsior on Sunday night.

In Noway’s Eliteserien on Monday morning, Patrick Yazbek (cap #641) played the first half of Viking’s 1-0 win against Stromsgodset. Nick D’Agostino (cap #621) came on in the 80th minute for the team.

In the Scottish Premiership, Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game on Sunday morning as St Johnstone lost 2-1 to Livingston in the relegation group.

Elsewhere in Scotland’s top flight at the same time, Ryan Strain (cap #624) played 67 minutes for St Mirren in their 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock. Keanu Baccus (cap #628) came on as Strain was replaced to play the remainder of St Mirren’s defeat.

In Thai League, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played all of Buriram United’s 1-1 draw with Port FC on Sunday night.

In K-League 1, Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) played a full game for Incheon United with the side going down 2-1 to FC Seoul on Saturday night.

In J. League, Mitchell Langerak (cap #566) was the goalkeeper for Nagoya Grampus’ 1-0 loss to Gamba Osaka on Saturday night.

Also in the competition on Saturday night, Mitchell Duke (cap #559) came on in the 83rd minute of Machida Zelvia’s 0-0 draw with Shonan Bellmare.
