Socceroos Abroad: Middlesbrough form rolls, St Mirren lift Scottish League Cup

Riley McGree’s strong form continued to set the tone for another productive weekend for the CommBank Socceroos abroad, with Middlesbrough’s momentum under new head coach Kim Hellberg showing no signs of slowing.

There was also historic success in Scotland, where Keanu Baccus played a key role as St Mirren lifted the Scottish League Cup to cap off a memorable weekend for Australians overseas.

Starting in the Championship, where Riley McGree (cap #509) played 64 minutes in a 3-1 win over QPR on Sunday, to make it four wins from four under new head coach Kim Hellberg and remain second in the league. 

Sam Silvera (cap #634) came off the bench in the 83rd minute. 


Elsewhere in the Championship, Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) was an unused substitute in a 2-2 draw with Wrexham on Sunday.

Cameron Burgess (cap #633) also played the full match for Swansea City on Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Stoke City.

Hayden Matthews (cap #648) also played 93 minutes for Portsmouth in a 2-1 win over Lewis Miller's (cap #635) Blackburn on Sunday. Miller played the full game for Rovers, while Adrian Segecic was also an unused substitute for Pompey.  

In EFL League One, Alex Robertson (cap #630) played 65 minutes for Cardiff City on Sunday in a 4-3 win over Doncaster. 

In EFL League Two, Gethin Jones (cap #639) played a full game for MK Dons on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with Cambridge United on Sunday.

Elsewhere in League One, Joe Gauci (cap #631) was an unused substitute for Port Vale in a 2-2 draw with Luton Town on Sunday. 

In the Eredivisie, Jordan Bos (cap #632) came on in the 64th minute as Feyenoord lost 2-0 to Ajax on Monday. 

Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) played a full game for Heracles Almelo in a 4-3 loss to league leaders PSV on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the league, Max Balard (cap #652) played another full game on Monday in NAC Breda's 1-1 draw with FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie.

In Germany's Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played another full game while Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) came off the bench in the 96th minute as St Pauli picked up a much-needed three points in a 2-1 win over 1. FC Heidenheim on Sunday to move out of the relegation zone.

Nicolas Milanovic (cap #651) was an unused substitute for Aberdeen on Monday in a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock FC.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Cameron Devlin (cap #625) played 87 minutes for Heart of Midlothian FC in a 2-0 win over Falkirk on Sunday.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) came on in the 73rd minute for Motherwell in a 0-0 draw with Dundee United on Sunday.

Lastly, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played a full game and assisted as St Mirren FC beat Celtic 3-1 in the Scottish League Cup Final on Monday to make history and lift their first major trophy since 1987.


In Austria, Marco Tilio (cap #616) came on in the 77th minute for Rapid Wien on Monday in a 1-1 draw with FC Blau-Weiß Linz.

Moving to Croatia, Fran Karacic (cap #607) was an unused substitute for Hajduk Split alongside September window call-up Anthony Kalik in a 3-1 win over NK Lokomotiva on Sunday.

In the Czech First League, Garang Kuol (cap #627) was an unused substitute for Sparta Prague in a 2-2 draw with FC Slovan Liberec on Monday.

Moving back to the Netherlands, Josh Nisbet (#642) played another full game for Roda JC Kerkrade in a 3-2 win over De Graafschap in the Dutch second division on Saturday.

In Thailand, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played a full game for Buriram United in a 1-0 win over Port FC on Sunday.

In EFL League One, Raphael Borges Rodrigues played the full game and scored a goal for Wigan Athletic in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town AFC on Saturday. It's also his fifth start in a row for the club as he continues to get plenty of experience in the English third tier. The point sees Wigan sit in 11th position on the ladder.
