Socceroos Abroad: MLS Showdowns for a pair of Aussies

The spotlight falls on the MLS this weekend as Aiden O’Neill and New York City FC prepare for their own winner-takes-all clash against Charlotte FC, while Patrick Yazbek and Nashville gear up to face Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in a decisive Game 3.

Starting in the MLS Cup playoffs, Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) and New York City FC are also heading into a winner-takes-all showdown against Charlotte FC on Saturday at 11am (AEDT).

The series has already been a rollercoaster. NYCFC secured a narrow 1–0 victory in Game 1 thanks to a 34th-minute strike from Alonso Martínez, but Charlotte fought back in Game 2, holding the visitors to a 0–0 draw before edging them 7–6 in a dramatic penalty shootout to level the series.

Now, with everything at stake, NYCFC must find a way to overcome Charlotte in Game 3 to keep their playoff hopes alive, while Charlotte will look to continue their momentum and claim the decisive win. Fellow Aussie Archie Goodwin could also feature for Charlotte.


Elsewhere in the MLS playoffs, Patrick Yazbek (cap #641) should feature for Nashville as they face Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the all-important Game 3 of the series on Sunday at 12pm (AEDT).

The two sides have traded blows across the opening matches: Inter Miami won the first game 3–1, while Nashville bounced back with a 2–1 victory in Game 2 to level the series and force a winner-takes-all decider.

All eyes will once again be on Messi, who has already made his mark in the playoffs, as Miami look to secure a spot in the next round. Meanwhile, Yazbek and Nashville will aim to build on their home momentum and pull off an upset.

Meanwhile, Brad Smith (cap #575) could also feature in the playoffs for FC Cincinnati on Sunday at 10am (AEDT) against Columbus Crew.

In mid-week EFL Championship action, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) played a full game for Swansea City in a 2-1 loss to Preston North End FC on Thursday.

They return to action on Saturday at 11:30pm (AEDT) against Millwall FC.

Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) came off the bench in the 83rd minute for Watford as they drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

They return to action on Saturday at 7am (AEDT) against Bristol City. 

Elsewhere, Lewis Miller (cap #635) continues to impress for Blackburn Rovers in the English Championship, playing the full 90 minutes in their 1-0 win over Bristol City on Wednesday.

It marked his fourth consecutive full match and the club’s third straight victory as they continue to climb the table.


They face Callum Elder's (cap #614) Derby on Saturday at 11:30pm (AEDT). Elder’s strong season with Derby County continued, with the fullback playing the entire match in a 2-1 win over Hull City on Wednesday. 

He has featured in 10 of the Rams’ 14 league fixtures, starting nine, keeping three clean sheets, and averaging 71 minutes per appearance. 

Hayden Matthews (cap #648) was an unused substitute for Portsmouth on Thursday in a 0-0 draw with Wrexham.

They return to Championship action on Saturday at 11:30pm (AEDT) against Hull City.

Riley McGree (cap #509) came off the bench in the 63rd minute as Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Leicester City FC on Wednesday.

It marked another positive step for the Socceroos midfielder, who only recently made his first competitive appearance in 204 days after battling a persistent foot injury that had sidelined him since April. McGree has now featured in consecutive Championship matches as he works his way back to full fitness.

Sam Silvera (cap #634) also came off the bench for the final 10 minutes. Boro host Norwich City FC on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

In injury news, Harry Souttar (cap #606) is continuing his rehabilitation at Leicester City under manager Martí Cifuentes as he works his way back from an Achilles injury. The centre-back, who spent part of last season on loan at Sheffield United, has missed the entirety of the 2025/26 campaign so far but is making steady progress and is edging closer to rejoining full training.

In EFL League One, Joe Gauci (cap #631) should be Port Vale's goalkeeper when they face Bolton on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

Elsewhere in League One, Alex Robertson (cap #630) could also feature for Cardiff City on Sunday at 2am (AEDT) against Blackpool FC.

Meanwhile, tests have revealed the extent of Alessandro Circati's (cap #637) injury, with scans confirming a significant ligament tear in his right ankle. 

The defender has already begun treatment and rehabilitation, though his recovery is expected to take at least six weeks, ruling him out for the remainder of 2025, with a return targeted for January.

In Denmark, Paul Izzo (cap #650) could feature for Randers alongside Mohamed Toure (cap #636) when they host second place FC Midtjylland on Monday at 2am (AEDT). 

In the Eredivisie, Ajdin Hrustic's (cap #589) Heracles Almelo travel to Excelsior Rotterdam on Sunday at 2:30am (AEDT) as they look for two wins in a row to give themselves a chance of survival.


Elsewhere in the league, Max Balard (cap #652) should also feature on Sunday at 4:45am (AEDT) when NAC Breda travel to FC Volendam in the Eredivisie.

In Spain, Maty Ryan (cap #555) is likely to be in goal as Levante travel to Atlético de Madrid on Sunday at 4:30am (AEDT).

In Germany's Bundesliga, Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) and Jackson Irvine (cap #568) could be in St. Pauli's squad on Monday at 1:30am (AEDT) as the side travel to SC Freiburg.

In Serbia, Milos Degenek (cap #585) might start on Monday at 3am (AEDT) as TSC Backa Topola travel to FK IMT.

In Norway, returning Socceroo Nick D'Agostino (cap #621) and Gianni Stensness (cap #617) should be in Viking's squad as they host Hamarkameratene on Sunday at 4am (AEDT). 

Nicolas Milanovic (cap #651) came off the bench in the 75th minute while Kusini Yengi (cap #638) was an unused substitute for Aberdeen on Friday in the Conference League in a 0-0 draw with AEK Larnaca FC.

They return to league action on Monday at 2am (AEDT) against Apostolos Stamatelopoulos' (cap #644) Motherwell.

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Cameron Devlin's (cap #625) Heart of Midlothian FC host Ryan Strain's (cap #624) Dundee United on Monday at 2am (AEDT). 

In Poland, and freshly called up for the November window, Deni Juric is expected to be in action for second place Wisla Plock when they face Motor Lublin on Sunday at 3:30am (AEDT) in the Ekstraklasa.

CommBank Young Socceroo James Overy, who earned a maiden Socceroos call-up for November, is likely to feature for Manchester United U18 against Leeds U18 this weekend.

Devlin has been outstanding this season, ranking among the league’s elite midfielders. Among all Premiership midfielders, he leads the competition in duels won, sliding tackles, defensive duels won, possessions won, and net possessions (won minus lost), underlining his immense influence in Hearts’ title-chasing campaign.

Martin Boyle (cap #599) and November window call-up Jack Iredale are likely to feature for Hibernian as they travel to Keanu Baccus' (cap #628) St Mirren FC on Sunday at 4:45am (AEDT). 

In Japan, Mitch Duke (cap #559) should feature for Machida Zelvia on Sunday at 4pm (AEDT) in J. League against FC Tokyo.

Continuing in Japan, Jason Geria (cap #586) may get minutes for Alibirex Niigata as they travel to Shonan Bellmare on Saturday at 5pm (AEDT).  

In the Conference League, Marco Tilio (cap #616) was an unused substitute for Rapid Wien in a 1-0 loss to CS Universitatea Craiova on Friday.

They return to Austrian Bundesliga action on Monday at 12:30am (AEDT) against WSG Tirol.

Elsewhere in Austria, Jacob Italiano (cap #653) is likely to be out for a stint on the sidelines with Grazer AK, nursing a calf strain, when they travel to September call-up Noah Botic's Austria Wien on Sunday at 3am (AEDT). 

Moving to Croatia, Fran Karacic (cap #607) and September window call-up Anthony Kalik could feature for Hajduk Split when they face NK Osijek on Saturday at 3:45am (AEDT).
 


In Hungary, Daniel Arzani (cap #596) could feature for Ferencvárosi TC they return to league action on Monday at 1:15am (AEDT) against Kazincbarcikai SC.

Ryan Teague (cap #649) will target minutes for KV Mechelen as they take on Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League on Monday at 5:15am (AEDT). 

In the Czech First League, Garang Kuol's (cap #627) Sparta Prague face FK Teplice on Monday at 1:30am (AEDT).

He was an unused substitute in the Conference League on Friday in a 0-0 draw with Raków Częstochowa. 

Moving back to the Netherlands, Josh Nisbet (#642) should feature again for Roda JC Kerkrade when they travel to ADO Den Haag on Saturday at 6am (AEDT). 

Fellow Aussie Cameron Peupion is also having a fantastic spell at Den Haag.  The club sit seven points clear at the top of the competition ladder and one match behind second-placed Cambuur. The club remain undefeated in the league, having won 12 from 13 matches.

In Spain's second tier, Awer Mabil (cap #597) should feature for Castellon when they face Burgos CF on Tuesday at 6:30am (AEDT).

In Thailand, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) and Curtis Good (cap #569) should feature for Buriram United when they face Chonburi FC on Sunday at 10:30pm (AEDT). 

In the K2 League, Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) could start for Incheon United when they face Jeonnam Dragons on Saturday at 4pm (AEDT). 

Elsewhere in Korea's second tier, John Iredale (cap #640) could feature for Seoul E-Land when they face Chungbuk Cheongju FC on Sunday at 4pm (AEDT).
