Socceroos Abroad: Ryan heroics as Levante hold Atletico, Hrustic scores, McGree and Elder shine in England

There was plenty happening this weekend for Aussies abroad, with Maty Ryan producing a huge performance for Levante to keep a clean sheet against Atletico Madrid.

Callum Elder and Riley McGree picked up assists in England, while Mohamed Toure completed his move to Norwich City.

Meanwhile, Ajdin Hrustic continued his fine form with a goal and man of the match performance in the Netherlands.

Beginning in Spain's La Liga, Maty Ryan (cap #555) put in a top display for Levante, keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid. The goalkeeper made four saves as they held third-place Atletico scoreless.


Several Socceroos took the field in this weekend’s EFL Championship matches.

Callum Elder (cap #614) played a full game and assisted Derby County’s first goal as they beat Bristol City 5-0 on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, Riley McGree (cap #609) assisted the winning goal for Middlesbrough as they beat Norwich City 1-0. The midfielder played an hour as the team moved level on points with Coventry City in first place. Sam Silvera (cap #634) was on Middlesbrough’s bench.

In more Sunday football, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) contributed to a Swansea City clean sheet, playing a full game as they downed Watford 2-0 on Sunday. Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) came on in the 76th minute for Watford before being sent off.

Also, Lewis Miller (cap #635) played the second half for Blackburn Rovers in a 1-0 loss to Hull City.

September window call-up Adrian Segecic played 75 minutes for Portsmouth as they downed West Bromwich Albion 3-0.

In some transfer news, Mohamed Toure (cap #636) completed his permanent move to Norwich City, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal at the former English Premier League club. 


In the Eredivisie, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) opened the scoring for Heracles in a vital 2-1 win, playing 84 minutes against Fortuna Sittard on Monday. The midfielder now has four goals and seven assists this season as Heracles moved one point above Volendam and into 16th place - which is a relegation playoff spot.

Moving to Scotland, Martin Boyle (cap #599) played 66 minutes for Hibernian as they drew 0-0 with Rangers on Monday. November window call-up Jack Iredale played a full game for Hibs, helping the side to a hard-fought clean sheet. 

In other Scottish Premiership action on Sunday, Ryan Strain (cap #624) played a full game for Dundee United as they lost 3-0 to Hearts, while Nicolas Milanovic (cap #651) was on the bench for Aberdeen as they lost 3-0 to Kilmarnock.

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game for Livingston in a 2-0 loss to Motherwell. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) was on the Motherwell bench.

In EFL League One, Joe Gauci (cap #631) was important in Port Vale’s 1-0 win against Leyton Orient on Sunday, keeping a clean sheet and making two saves. Gauci has now started three of Port Vale’s last four matches.

Continuing with the League One action, Alex Robertson (cap #630) scored a brace for Cardiff City in a 2-2 draw with Burton Albion. The midfielder scored twice after halftime to put Cardiff in the lead, before being substituted in the 74th minute.

Shifting over to Germany, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) was subbed on in the 71st minute of St. Pauli’s 2-1 loss to Augsburg on Sunday morning in the Bundesliga.

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) played a full game in Parma's 4-1 loss to Juventus on Monday in Serie A.

Back in the Netherlands, Max Balard (cap #652) played 83 minutes for NAC Breda as they drew 2-2 with Twente on Sunday, while Jordy Bos (cap #632) played a full game for Feyenoord in their 3-0 loss to PSV Eindhoven on Monday. 

In Serbia, Milos Degenek (cap #585) played a full game for APOEL as they downed rivals Olympiakos Nicosia 2-0 on Monday. It was the defender’s second start since joining the club earlier this month.

In Croatia, Fran Karacic (cap #607) played all of Osijek's 1-0 win against Rijeka on Monday, keeping the side clear of the relegation spots for now. 

Elsewhere in Croatia, September window call-up Anthony Kalik was on the bench for Hajduk Split as they lost 1-0 to HNK Gorica on Sunday morning.

Over in Poland, November window call-up Deni Juric scored Wisla Plock's second in a 2-1 win against Rakow Czestochowa on Monday. The striker played 77 minutes, scoring his second goal of the season. 

Moving back to the Netherlands, Josh Nisbet (#642) scored a late winner for Roda JC Kerkrade on Sunday, winning 2-1 against Almere City. The midfielder has now scored in back-to-back games.

In Czech First League, Garang Kuol (cap #627) came on in the 66th minute of Sparta Prague’s 3-0 win against Dukla Praha on Sunday morning.

Marco Tilio (cap #616) played the first half of Rapid Wien’s 3-0 loss to Ried on Sunday in the Austrian Bundesliga.

In EFL League Two, Gethin Jones (cap #639) played a full game for MK Dons as they drew 2-2 with Grimsby Town on Sunday.

Awer Mabil (cap #597) was on the bench for Castellon in a 2-0 win against FC Andorra on Monday as the team continued their title push in Spain's La Liga 2. 

Bailey Wright (cap #576) scored for Lion City Sailors in a 5-1 win over Balestier Khalsa on Sunday night in the Singapore Premier League.
