Socceroos Abroad: Scottish Premiership kicks off, Irvine scores in pre-season

Several Socceroos made their mark as the Scottish Premiership kicked off, with notable performances from Cameron Devlin and Kye Rowles helping Heart of Midlothian secure a draw against Rangers while Jackson Irvine also scored in pre-season.

Starting in  Scotland, where the Scottish Premiership kicked off for our Aussies.

Cameron Devlin (cap #625) and Kye Rowles (cap #622) both played full games as Heart of Midlothian picked up a point to open the season with a 1-1 draw against Rangers on Saturday.

An impressive opening day performance by the Jam Tarts, who head to Dundee next Saturday for matchday two.

Elsewhere in Scotland's top flight, Hibernian kicked off their season on Monday with Lewis Miller (cap #635) and Martin Boyle (cap #599) both playing full games in a 3-0 loss to St Mirren.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) came off the bench in the 67th minute as Motherwell also started their season with a scoreless draw against Ross County on Sunday.

In the Scottish Championship, Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game for Livingston as they started their season with a 2-0 win over Dunfermline Athletic FC on Sunday.

 


Over to the German Bundesliga pre-season, where Jackson Irvine (#568) played a full game and opened the scoring with a header while Connor Metcalfe (#611) played the first half for St. Pauli in a 3-1 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday.

 

Over to Bayern Munich, where Nestory Irankunda (cap #643) came off the bench in the 68th minute as they beat former Socceroos manager Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday in Korea.

The 18-year-old created a number of goalscoring opportunities during his cameo. 

 


Over to Italy, where Alessandro Circati (cap #637) came on in the 70th minute for Parma to continue their pre-season in a 4-1 win over Atalanta on Monday.

Elsewhere in Serie A pre-season, Maty Ryan (cap #555) was on the bench for Roma as they drew 1-1 with Olympiacos on Sunday.

In France, Denis Genreau (cap #610) also notched up some more pre-season minutes as he played the second half in Toulouse's 0-0 draw with Espanyol on Monday as preparations for Round 1 continue.

Joe Gauci (cap #631) started and played 63 minutes in Aston Villa's 1-0 friendly loss to Club America on Sunday as they continue their preparations for the start of the Premier League season.


Elsewhere with the Premier League sides, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) and Massimo Luongo (cap #571) came on at half time as Ipswich Town beat TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 1-0 on Saturday.

Riley McGree (cap #509) played 73 minutes in Championship side Middlesbrough's 1-0 pre-season win over Heerenveen on Saturday.

Samuel Silvera (cap #634) also played a full game while Kusini Yengi (cap #638) notched up 71 minutes in Portsmouth's 2-0 loss to Charlton on Sunday to continue their Championship pre-season.

In League One preparations, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played the first half for Mansfield Town as they beat Grimsby Town 1-0 on Sunday. 

The Belgian First Division A season also continued for Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) as his Standard de Liège side played their Round 2 match against Club Brugge on Monday, O'Neill played the full game as they won 1-0.

 


Over to Denmark, where Mohamed Toure (cap #636) came off the bench in the 60th minute as Randers drew 1-1 with fellow undefeated side FC Copenhagen in Round 3 of the Danish Superliga on Monday. Paul Izzo was also in goal for Randers.

John Iredale (cap #640) also started and played 64 minutes in the Danish Superliga as AaB Fodbold lost 2-0 to FC Midtjylland on Sunday.

In the Swiss Super League, Awer Mabil (cap #597) started and played 60 minutes for Grasshopper as they lost 3-0 to Basel on Sunday. 

Grasshopper have started the campaign with two losses and a draw.

In Sweden, Alex Gersbach (cap #587) played 69 minutes for Kalmar FF as they lost 4-1 to Hammarby Fotboll on Monday in the Allsvenskan. Kalmar are second to bottom, three points away from safety.

In Norway’s Eliteserien, Gianni Stensness (cap #671) played a full game for Viking FK in a 3-3 draw with HamKam on Monday.

Subway Olyroos

Giuseppe Bovalina came off the bench in the 89th minute for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Leagues Cup friendly series on Sunday as they bear Club Tijuana 3-1. 

Louis D'Arrigo was on the bench in Lechia Gdansk's 3-1 loss to Lech Poznan in the Polish Ekstraklasa.
