Socceroos finish 22nd at the FIFA World Cup™ 2026

The FIFA World Cup™ 2026 tournament standings have been confirmed as Spain were crowned champions for a second time after a 1-0 extra-time win against Argentina.

The Socceroos finished in 22nd place out of the 48 participating nations following their Round of 32 exit to Egypt.

The Aussies advanced from the group stage with four points in second spot behind co-hosts the United States, before bowing out of the competition in heartbreaking fashion after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Pharaohs.

Australia ultimately collected five points as per FIFA regulations matches decided by penalty shootouts are counted as draws for statistical purposes.

It was a tournament which also saw 16 Socceroos make their FIFA World Cup™ debuts and an indication of the exciting times ahead with a relatively young squad boasting a lot of potential.
 


Tony Popovic's side return to international action in just over two months for a two-match friendly series against powerhouse Brazil in Townsville on Friday, 25 September and Brisbane on Tuesday, 29 September.
