USA defeat Socceroos 2-0 in second game of Group D
The Socceroos have been defeated 2-0 by the United States in Seattle.
Two first-half goals were enough for the home side despite a much-improved showing by Australia in the second half.
There were two changes from the side who defeated Türkiye in the first game of the tournament. Nishan Velupillay and Mathew Leckie came into the starting eleven in place of Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda.
The game started at a high tempo in front of a rollicking stadium in Seattle. Australia created a chance within the opening minute, Mo Toure applying high pressure to find a shot from a tight angle.
However, it was USA who scored first. Folarin Balogun did well to break down the left-hand side. His cross was a teasing one, and it deflected off Cameron Burgess into the back of the net as he tracked back to prevent it reaching a white shirt.
The Socceroos had a chance immediately after the goal, with Mathew Leckie shooting wide from outside the penalty area. Leckie was also essential to a chance in the 23rd minute, his cross in leading to a succession of corners.
USA dominated possession for the majority of the half. Australia defended stoutly, but the game had a more open feel to it than matchday one, with the United States pressing high and causing problems as a result.
They scored their second through a set piece not long before half-time. A free kick was sent to Sergino Dest at the edge of the box. His shot was deflected, but it looped into the path of Alex Freeman, who converted from close range. The goal was initially flagged for offside but was given after VAR review.
Popovic made a triple change at the break as he looked to wrest momentum away from the home side. Jason Geria replaced Cameron Burgess at the back, Connor Metcalfe came on for Nishan Velupillay, and Nestory Irankunda replaced Mo Toure.
Alessandro Circati was called upon to show off his speed and covering defending early in the second half. Balogun was through on goal after a quick break but the 22-year-old recovered well to make a fantastic block and prevent the shot reaching the target.
Mathew Leckie was forced off with injury 15 minutes into the half. He was replaced by Cristian Volpato, who came on for his World Cup debut.
Volpato was involved within minutes. A fantastic ball from Connor Metcalfe released Irankunda, whose cutback found Volpato in the box. The substitute fired over with his first touch.
It was the start of a much-improved period for Australia who began to have more possession and create chances. Volpato and Irankunda were central to a lot of the good work, as well as the substitute Metcalfe.
Jackson Irvine was the final substitution for the Socceroos, replacing Paul Okon-Engstler in midfield with 12 minutes of regulation time remaining.
Despite late pressure, Australia were unable to find the breakthrough.
Focus now turns to the third game in Group D against Paraguay next week. Qualification remains well and truly in the Socceroos' hands and there are plenty of positive signs to take ahead of the final group stage game.
