'That was by far the best goal I've ever scored': Metcalfe reacts to screamer

Connor Metcalfe revealed his stunning 35-yard strike in for FC St.Pauli in a 5-1 trouncing of Holstein Kiel in the 2.Bundesliga was his best goal of his career to date.

The ball spilled out to the versatile midfielder after an initial shot by a teammate was blocked with Metcalfe instinctively unloading a speculative piledriver which flew into the top corner to opening the scoring inside four minutes.

The 23-year-old would also grab an assist in an impressive 90 minute performance for Fabian Hürzeler's side

Despite an unbeaten start the Boys in Brown needed the three points to get their season back on track and stay in touch with the top of the table after four successive draws.

“That was by far the best goal I've ever scored, as you could probably tell by my reaction," Metcalfe told FC St.Pauli's official website after the convincing victory.

"When we scored so early and went on to get three in the first half, it felt like we were back on track at long last."

One of the players unavailable for the match was, captain Jackson Irvine who has been ruled out for the foreseeable future after sustaining that ankle injury in the final stages of the Subway Socceroos' 2-2 stalemate with Mexico in Dallas.

"We had to cope with the loss of several players and the game showed the importance of every single player in the squad," Metcalfe added.

Having transitioned into more of a winger-come-advanced attacking midfielder in Germany, Metcalfe returned to his more familiar role as a holding midfielder.

"The position I played in today isn't a new one for me because I play there for Australia as well," he said.

The win moves the Hamburg-based club to sixth on the table with 10 points after six matches.
