Wright delighted with Rotherham United loan move

Bailey Wright is hoping a change of scenery can coincide with more consistent playing time after completing a deadline day loan move to Championship side Rotherham United for the remainder of the season.

The Subway Socceroos defender arrives to the Millers on a provisional deal from Sunderland and determined to hit the ground running, having experienced his first deadline day transfer.

Rotherham will be Wright's fourth professional club of his career.

"Last night I spoke to the gaffer, had a chat and knew you know the opportunity to come here and play more football at a really good club and it had excited me," Wright said in an interview with the club's official website upon his unveiling.

"I liked what I heard, and I want to be part of it so to get it done today (Tuesday evening UK time), I'm obviously delighted.

"I'm here to work, I'm here to obviously be part of the team and do what I can to really push this on and enjoy the season, so I'm looking forward to it."

The 30-year-old is no stranger to the cut-throat nature of English football having amassed close to 400 games across League One and the Championship since 2010 with Preston North End, Bristol City and indeed the Black Cats.

Wright had been with Sunderland for the last three years but had seen first-team opportunities come sporadically this campaign.

From a possible 31 games in all competitions Wright made 16 appearances and eight starts.

A move was best for both parties and now Wright is inspired to help Rotherham stave off relegation as the side languish 20th, two points above the drop zone.

"The Championship is a tough division and you look how tight that league is throughout, obviously you said there, the aim is to stay up," he explained.

"I think that's a lot of teams' aim is to stay up in the Championship.

"... I've played not as much football this season as I would have liked, I've had to be patient for more time at Sunderland.

"And I've had moments to play and I'm one of them players that I want to be out playing as regularly as I can and competing for places as much as I can.

"I feel that's a real good chance for me here to be part of the group, push each other and be part of something great."

Melbourne-born Wright, who has two goals in 28 caps for Australia, has been a part of two successful promotions, initially with Preston and later Sunderland.

On the international stage, Wright has been involved in two FIFA World Cups - in 2014 and 2022 - making his tournament debut as a substitute in the famous 1-0 win against Denmark.

The centre-back revealed he is proud about his accomplishments but insisted he still has plenty of ambition left in the game, still motivated to be better every day.

"I'm proud of a lot of achievements there and getting promoted and going to the World Cup was like no other really," he said.

"From a personal perspective, it's a pinnacle for any footballer, so to have represented Australia at a World Cup and be part of an Aussie World Cup where we made history and did better than any Australian team ever has.

"So that's something that will always live with me and I want more moments like that."

Wright could debut for his new club in a sold-out South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United this Saturday, 11:30pm AEDT.
