Squad notes: Eight recalled to Socceroos for October window

CommBank Socceroos Head Coach Tony Popovic named his latest squad on Friday ahead of friendlies against Canada and USA later this month.

Eight players have been recalled to the squad as preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ continue in full swing.

Mat Ryan, Goalkeeper

Mat Ryan returns to the Socceroos after being rested for the Soccer Ashes. Since helping Australia qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2025™ the 33-year-old has since moved to Levante, where he has made five appearances in La Liga, keeping one clean sheet.

With a century of national team appearances, Ryan is the most experienced member of the Socceroos squad.

 

 

Alex Robertson, Midfielder

Third-generation Socceroo Alex Robertson has been named in a squad for the first time since October 2023.

The talented playmaker is yet to make a competitive appearance for Cardiff City this season after struggling with injury but his body of work over the past few seasons has done enough to earn him another look on the international stage.

The 22-year-old will hope to earn his third cap this international window.

Daniel Arzani, Forward

Exciting forward Daniel Arzani returns to the squad after being part of the squad that defeated Japan and Saudi Arabia in June.

Arzani moved during the off-season from Melbourne Victory to Hungarian side Ferencváros, where he has made two league appearances.

Jason Geria, Defender

Jason Geria returns to the Socceroos after overcoming injury concerns that saw him miss out on six weeks of football.

The centre-back has played in the J1 League for Albirex Niigata since the beginning of the year, racking up 18 appearances.

Mitchell Duke, Forward

Mitchell Duke also returns to the squad for the first time since scoring against Saudi Arabia to help seal World Cup qualification.

Duke is in his third season with J1 team Machida Zelvia. He has scored two goals in 21 appearances this season.

Nick D’Agostino, Forward

Nick D’Agostino earns his first call-up under Tony Popovic for this camp.

The three-time Socceroo is in his third season at Norwegian side Viking, where he has a goal and an assist in five appearances this season.

He first burst onto the scene at Melbourne Victory under Popovic and will hope that reuniting with his old manager can reignite his international career.

Cameron Devlin, Midfielder

Cammy Devlin also earns his first call-up under Popovic after consistent performances in the Scottish Premiership for Hearts.

The 27-year-old is a cult hero in Scotland for his outstanding work rate and will hope to replicate that in green and gold.

His last appearance for the team was against Palestine in June 2024.

Fran Karacic, Defender

Fran Karacic returns to the squad after missing last window through injury.

The 29-year-old right-back has hit the ground running at new club Hajduk Split, with a goal and an assist in his seven appearances so far.
